Actually, the real question is: "What is lower Allston?" Sure, it's got some telling street names (uh, Hooker), and we share the same zip code, but, really, what purpose does it serve?
Exactly.
Because there's no real industry in "lower" Allston- and the crime rate is presumably higher- here at AP we've taken a bit of re-zoning liberties. Hence, Allston Proper, the area enclosed by Brighton, Brookline, Cambridge St., and Packards Corner.
In Allston Proper, all is proper and new vocabulary abounds. Locative terms like Ehar (east of Harvard Ave.) and Wehar (west of Harvard Ave.) might sound like Jabberywokky-talk, but they're more useful than using landmarks like Blanchards or that hair-salon-cum-Halloween-shop on the corner of Glenville/Harvard.
